Strictly’s Jody Cundy ‘flashed signs of anger’ over recent mistake claims expert

A body language expert has claimed Jody Cundy showcased signs of “fear and anger” during his latest Strictly Come Dancing performance.

The eight-time Paralympic champion began his Strictly journey with 21 points for his Quickstep to I’m Sitting on Top of the World.

However, he earned a low 16 points from judges Craig Revel Horwood, Anton du Beke, Motsi Mabuse and Shirley Ballas for his Paso Doble to AC/DC’s Thunderstruck.

Despite being partnered with reigning Strictly professional champion Jowita Przystal, body language expert Darren Stanton doesn’t believe the pair are particularly close.

Speaking on behalf of Betfair, the behavioural expert said: “It looked like Jody was a bit disconnected during his dance with Jowita. They didn’t seem to have a particularly close connection this week.”

After Jody, 44, and Jowita, 29, performed the fiery number in front of the judges, Craig was unimpressed and only awarded the ex-athlete a score of three.

At the time, the 58-year-old called the Paralympian’s routine “a little bit stompy” as well as being “flat” in parts.

Offering advice, the judge told Jody that he needs to begin “moving through the music, not just do a full stop each time.”

Regarding last week’s dance, Darren said: “I did notice he flashed signs of fear and anger in his facial expressions when he made a mistake during their performance. There was something that caused his emotions to change this week.”

Fans across X (formerly Twitter) were also quick to criticise Jody’s latest BBC ballroom effort.

One wrote: “Oh no, I really didn’t like Jody’s Paso, I think he could be in trouble tonight.”

A second commented: “Ooh, uncomfortable from Jody. It’s like a Paso but slower. Fire quite unnecessary and time-wasted at the start. Not great, which is a shame.”

Jody himself also admitted to struggling during the dance competition and recently told the BBC that he finds it “taxing” to learn a new routine.

Speaking to BBC Breakfast, the Cambridgeshire man said: “Learning the steps, the constant repeating stuff… I cannot get my left leg and my right leg to do what my brain is telling me … and that is really taxing.”

The dancer, who wears his prosthetic leg to participate in the competition, continued to say that the “mental part” of the choreography was “getting” to him.

Despite not being in a “competitive mood” until the first dance, Jody said: “Then all of a sudden the music starts and you just switch on to what you’ve been doing in the studio.”

Partner Jowita, who lifted the Glitterball Trophy with Wildlife presenter Hamza Yassin last season, said that she understands the competition can be “stressful”.

“We throw somebody who’s never danced before in the room, telling the person: ‘You have four days to learn the routine, to perfect it, and perform it in front of millions of people,’” she said.

On Saturday, Jody is expected to take to the dance floor and participate in Movie Week. He and his partner will be performing an American Smooth routine to ‘Married Life’ from Pixar’s 2009 movie, Up.

You can tune in to Strictly Come Dancing on Saturday at 6.20pm on BBC One.
