Gardeners World star Monty Don inundated with support over issue at Longmeadow

Gardeners’ World star Monty Don has been inundated with support after revealing his Longmeadow garden has been flooded by contaminated water.

Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, Monty shared a video of water streaming through a field, which he claims contains a high level of nitrate – which makes water unsuitable to drink.

Captioning the footage, he penned: “Run-off from fields going into flooded river taking with it nitrates. Repeated a thousand times every wet day, killing our waterways.”

Dozens of fans flocked to the comments section, as one person wrote: “The rain has been relentless. Plus there shouldn’t have been any left from the crop last year as farmers and agronomists put in only what is needed.”

Echoing the same sentiments, someone else said: “Thank you for highlighting this problem. Seeing a lot of this around Hampshire currently.”

While a third added: “We have houses built on flood plains and water now runs into roads and the drains can’t cope, causing flooding – I see ducks swimming in the flooded area now – it’s crazy and sad.”

Just last month, Monty heartbreakingly revealed that he and his wife Sarah were grieving the loss of his beloved dog, Nellie.

Monty announced the sad news of her death on October 21, telling his 1.2million followers on Instagram: “I was going to tell you about my new book which is published next week, but that can wait because my lovely dear Nell died last night.

“She was diagnosed with cancer in June and every day this summer has been a gift but it is over now.

“We buried her in the garden next to Nigel wrapped in one of my jackets with flowers, balls and her favourite biscuits.

“Her end was peaceful and dignified and ended obvious suffering but it never gets any easier to bear,” he added.

“So life goes on, but for the moment we are very, very sad.”

Reflecting on his other poignant memories of Nellie, Monty recalled: “She used to have a particular bark when she was excited about getting food.

“We used to call her ‘woo woo’, and she had a sort of particular ‘woo woo’ bark and those little things.”

Nell was a TV star in her own right after appearing alongside Monty on BBC’s Gardeners’ World several times over the years.

Her death comes just three years after Monty lost his second Golden Retriever, Nigel.
