Gardeners’ World’s Adam Frost details real reason for leaving Villa Farm

Adam Frost shares how to prep borders for later in the year

Gardeners’ World star Adam Frost said a bout of ill health was behind his decision to move away from Villa Farm.

For more than five years, the green-fingered host invited the show’s viewers into his Villa Farm home where he inspired many with his lush garden creations.

Adam, 54, shared the home near Stamford in Lincolnshire with his wife Sulina, their four children and multiple animals including their cat Ash.

But despite his enviable property, the couple decided to sell up and downsize last year following a string of health issues among them.

Adam revealed that his long-term wife was hospitalised after developing sepsis and his 15-year-old daughter Amelia had also become sick with an eating disorder.

As well as this, he and the household all contracted Covid which also took its toll.

Following the string of health woes, Adam said: “I was sat in front of a psychiatrist and a doctor and said, ‘You know, I’ve got burn-out and depression,’ which was a surprise as I only went into the room with Covid. The wheels came off a little bit.”

He went on to say he initially did the “bloke thing” of pretending to be fine, when he actually wasn’t.

“I think, in reality, life just caught up. No different to so many people, I think. We sat down and we all went, ‘What are we going to do?’

“We decided it was great with the house and the garden but actually what we realised was that it was great when everybody was well.

“When your wife gets poorly and your family get poorly, it’s a stark reminder that there are other things in life,” he added to The Times last year.

Adam’s family troubles led them to buyng a new “homely” property in the same area, but with “much less land”.

Following their big move, Adam kept viewers up to date with turning his new space into his dream garden.

Such changes included him “going to town on trees” because “they add so much to the garden”.

Other standout features include his wildflower meadow, patio, large shed and tiered flower beds.

Most recently, he showcased the fully grown sweetcorn from his garden, which was praised by his Instagram fans.

In the latest episode of the show, Adam returns with Rachel de Thame and Frances Tophill to celebrate a garden for all seasons.

Together, they tackle seasonal jobs for September and follow a head gardener who fell in love with horticulture at a young age.

Elsewhere, plantsman Jamie Butterworth also visits the magnificent walled garden at Scampston Hall.

Gardeners’ World airs tonight at 8pm on BBC Two.
