Helen Skelton’s dad forced to ‘step in’ after painful marriage split

Helen Skelton said her father “stepped in” to support her following her split from Richie Myler.

Last April, Richie left the family home and just four months after the Countyfile presenter gave birth to their third child, Elsie Kate, who is now one.

The pair were previously married for eight years, and share two more kids including, Ernie, eight, and Louis, six.

Helen, 40, has recently opened up about the split and has discussed how her family came to her aid after she initially remained tight-lipped on the situation.

In an extract from her new book, In My Stride, she wrote that she was “in shock” following the split from the 33-year-old professional rugby player.

“I know that following break-ups, people often say they didn’t see it coming and it sounds like a cliche, but that was me.”

Helen also admitted that she didn’t originally tell her parents that she and Richie were going their separate ways as she didn’t want to “inflict” pain on them.

However, the former Blue Peter presenter eventually told her father, Richard Skelton, after he made a surprise visit to her property in Leeds.

As per The Sun, she wrote: “He immediately stepped in, knowing I needed him, even though I didn’t want to admit it.”

It’s said that after she confided in her father about the split, he and Helen’s mother, Janet, helped her with caring for her kids.

Last October, the former BBC Radio 5 Live presenter announced that she had left her marital home behind and had opted to move into her family’s home in Cumbria.

After completing her stint on Strictly Come Dancing and coming in second place with partner Gorka Marquez, she elected to move into a property near her parents.

Speaking about her current relationship status, the presenter claimed that she just wants to spend her time “focusing” on her family.

She wrote: “I want to enjoy this time of focusing on my kids and my career. I don’t need to try to find energy I don’t have for a new relationship.”

Earlier this year, Richie himself opened up about the split and told his social media followers that he is not looking for “approval” from fans.

Taking to his Instagram stories, the Leeds Rhinos scrum-half told his 21,100 followers: “For clarity. As stated in my previous post, opinions of my life choices/breakdown of my marriage and how I choose to live my life – I am not asking for your approval/sympathy or commentary.

“This is something I have decided to never make a comment on and will never no matter how far I’m pushed.”

The rugby star has also claimed that trolls have been targeting him by writing “derogatory and disgusting comments” about himself and his family online.

In a post shared to his feed, Richie wrote: “For over 12 months there has been several individuals who have felt the need to write derogatory and disgusting comments about me and my family on this [Tattle.life] awful website.

“This isn’t just people having an opinion on somebody else’s life choices, these 4,000 comments all by the same 6/7 accounts are harmful and sickening”.

He went on to claim that three people posting online have been “uncovered” by North Yorkshire Police, and urged for anyone with more information to come forward.

In May, Richie announced that he and his partner had welcomed a daughter into the world.
