Kate Garraway says husband Derek choked and turned blue in recent near miss
Kate Garraway has shared that her health-stricken husband Derek Draper 'choked and turned blue' in a recent 'near miss'.
Derek is suffering from the devastating effects of Covid after he contracted it in 2020. He now receives round the clock care.
He's been in and out of hospital over the past few years, is only able to speak a few words and can't breathe in oxygen nor breathe out carbon dioxide efficiently, meaning his body is "slightly poisoned all the time".
Good Morning Britain host Kate, 56, who has been open and honest about her family's journey, has said that Derek needs to go to rehab to breathe properly again.
She spoke about a scary incident recently where Derek 'turned blue' and 'choked'.
Speaking to The Sunday Times, Kate explained that Derek has a "weird choking" condition that's leaving doctors stumped.
She said: “It happened again just last weekend. For absolutely no reason he just went blue.”
Some of Derek's carers were there at the time to help him breathe again, however, Kate and her 14-year-old son Billy witnessed the incident.
She spoke of how Derek eventually "sort of vomited" as the relieved carers knew they'd just had a "really near miss".
In July, Derek was rushed to hospital following Kate's "extraordinary" recognition at Windsor Castle, where she was awarded an MBE.
Derek was there to support his wife as she was given the MBE by Prince William, but Kate later revealed that he ended up in hospital.
Sharing a few images from the castle, Kate penned: "Well what a week, that started with Derek in hospital and ended with Derek in hospital, but with this extraordinary day in the middle. I am so incredibly moved and humbled by the whole experience.
"So many of you have sent so many lovely messages, including the lady who stopped her car a few minutes ago outside our house to say “I know what you’re going through, and I know how much that moment meant and I am a nurse.” it was so wonderful to see Derek’s determination to be there, so kind of the Prince of Wales, to make it special for him & to recognise the work of Jake our incredible carer, who represents all those who make Derek’s daily life possible, and of course my long-suffering, Mum and Dad!"
Kate went on to say it was "so humbling to meet all the others" there to receive their honours, who she branded "much more deserving than myself". She added: "The Prince of Wales managed to make every single one of them feel as special as they are."
