Kevin Costner ‘held power’ in divorce leaving ex-wife ‘no choice’ but to settle

Kevin Costner’s ex-wife Christine Baumgartner was reportedly ‘forced to settle their divorce’ or risk ‘losing everything’.

The couple, who split in May after 18 years of marriage, have spent the past four months wrapped up in legal issues over child support, housing, and technicalities related to their prenuptial agreement.

However, they have now finally come to an agreement in court – with Baumgartner only getting a fraction of the $248,000 (£200,000) a month she had initially tried to fight for in child support.

According to insiders, Baumgartner felt like she had no choice but to settle after a series of losses in the courts already – leading her to fear she could ‘lose everything’ if she continued to fight.

“Christine didn’t really have a choice but to settle because Kevin had all the power,” the source told DailyMail.

Adding that she didn’t want her children to go through the public drama any further, the insider added: “She never wanted any of this circus. It’s been a living nightmare and now she just wants to move on and start fresh and begin making her new house a home.”

The settlement out of court comes after Christine failed to make any significant wins in front of a judge.

In order to sort out the divorce, Costner brought in a legal team fronted by Laura Wasser – who has become known as ‘Queen of Hollywood Divorces’.

Over the past year alone she has helped navigate the splits of Ariana Grande and Dalton Gomez, Britney Spears and Sam Asghari, and Sofia Vergara and Joe Manganiello.

However, it seems her team has been kept busiest by Costner and his battle with Baumgartner, with reports that the overall fee between the two parties had already totalled more than $1million (£810,000).

Baumgartner is believed to have since moved into a $40,000 (£32,000) per month Santa Barbara rental home with the couple’s three children – Cayden Wyatt, 16, Hayes Logan, 14, and Grace Avery, 13.

However, it’s believed she isn’t happy with her new arrangement, saying – among other reasons – her two sons would have to share a bathroom while her daughter would share hers “with the house”.

The former handbag designer has stated she wants the children to have a ‘similar lifestyle’ to one they would have living with Costner.

She initially asked for $248,000 (£200,000) a month in order to maintain their lifestyle, but by the final ruling by the judge that was knocked down to just $63,000 (£50,000).

Following the child support cut, Christine asked for a whopping $885,000 (£716,000) to cover legal fees in the latest update on the former couple’s divorce proceedings.

The request was deemed ‘outrageous’ by Costner’s legal team and came just after Baumgartner was cited $14,000 (£11,000) for failing to answer judges’ questions properly.

Since the divorce has been settled there has been no mention of this request, making it appear to be off the table.
