Prince William not as ‘confident’ without Kate Middleton as he displays ‘nerves’ in NY

Prince William felt ‘nervous’ during his solo trip to New York and seemed less sure of himself without Kate Middleton around, an expert claimed.

The Prince of Wales, 41, travelled to the US this week for the unveiling of the finalists for the 2023 Earthshot Prize – an environmental award set up by the future king. Kate, meanwhile, embarked on a number of solo engagements in the UK – including a visit to a Royal Navy air base in Somerset and a trip to an east London charity.

And body language expert Darren Stanton said that, while Kate appeared confident and happy on her solo trips, William appeared more reserved than he would with the Princess by his side. The Prince of Wales’ use of minimal gestures on his trip to New York was reminiscent of the late Queen Elizabeth II, Darren added.

Speaking on behalf of Betfair Bingo, the body language expert said: “While Kate is naturally quite confident during both solo and joint engagements, William appears more sure of himself when in the company of his wife. While he still holds himself in a way that would be perceived as a confident manner to the public, gestures like placing his hands in his pockets and his smile not seeming as engaged would signal that he is feeling some manner of nerves during his solo trip.

“Kate is William’s rock and we often see him letting her take the lead during their joint engagements, with the Royal happy to watch on proudly as she takes charge during interactions. Out solo, William takes a more reserved approach and isn’t as animated as he can be when joined by Kate.

“The use of minimal gestures during his first outing in New York is similar to those made by the late Queen when appearing publicly. He chooses to have more of an understated yet stoic presence.”

Darren also analysed Princess Kate’s behaviour during her Navy base visit and noted how she had “stepped up” following the death of Queen Elizabeth II in September last year.

He said: “Kate definitely put the officers at ease. You can tell she has a very caring, and nurturing nature about her – even with people she's never met before.

“Looking at her genuine smiles, I know there was a big level of trust between her and the people she was interacting with.

"We then saw her shaking hands with people, and people formed a circle around her, so she was very much the centre of attention. You can see how much she's evolved in terms of her independence.”

He added: “She has completely stepped up – especially after the passing of the Queen. Kate seemed to be consistently confident, as she would be with William. It made no difference to her that she was doing it alone, and she seemed to be enjoying every moment.”

Darren went on to describe Princess Kate as ‘elegant’ – saying she looked as though she could have been part of the Royal Navy herself.
