Top Gear presenters speak out as BBC show axed following Freddie Flintoff crash

Ex Top Gear host says fans shouldn’t be too sad as show is paused

Top Gear hosts Paddy McGuinness and Chris Harris have both reacted after the BBC show was taken off air following Freddie Flintoff’s horror crash.

Production has been on hold on the show since last year after the former England cricket captain was hospitalised following a serious accident at a test track in Surrey.

Earlier this year, Freddie Flintoff confirmed that he had left the show and this week, the BBC said the show will not be returning for the “foreseeable future”.

Paddy McGuinness has now spoken out and shared a series of funny throwback photos to address the situation.

He penned on Instagram: “We were always going to be b*****ds but we were your b*****ds. Thanks for all the love over the years folks, it was very much appreciated. #TopGear.”

This has sparked speculation that the show is now permanently axed, with many of his fans reacting in the comments section.

One follower replied: “Wait wait wait! Why does this sound like good bye?! Someone tell me it’s not good bye!!!”

A second said: “The best presenting team this show has had in my opinion. Loved the banter. Very sad we will miss it in our house. Onwards and upwards Paddy.”

A third typed: “So sorry it had to end this way, you were all amazing, glad to hear Freddie is on the mend.”

Fellow presenter Chris Harris also posted an emotional message on Instagram highlighting his time on Top Gear.

He said: “How I’ll remember my time on Top Gear. Hundreds of hours laughing.

“There’s much to be said on how/why/what in the future. But for now, I’ll remember the good times and enjoy how much I love now being a part of @collectingcars. Look after people and, sometimes, they’ll look after you.”

After Freddie’s crash, a BBC spokesperson said that a hiatus for the show was the most appropriate decision.

Top Gear was relaunched in 2019 with McGuinness, Flintoff and Harris as co-hosts.

In August, creative director Clare Pizey left the show after six years, further fuelling speculation that Top Gear is unlikely to return.
