VMA chaos as Olivia Rodrigos set crashes down during song – sparking horror

Celebrities and viewers of Olivia Rodrigo's performance at the MTV VMAs were left shocked as parts of the set crashed down around her as she sang her hit song, Vampire.

As the 20 year old belted out the track amongst a forest-themed set, complete with trees and moss-like material, things appeared to go wrong.

Sparks flew overhead and trees fell down as Olivia appeared to look concerned whilst still belting out the track.

Suddenly, an aide rushed onto the stage and ushered her off, leaving the audience, including Selena Gomez, looking momentarily stunned.

Selena held up a hand to her ears as she looked around, bewildered.

But all was not as it seemed, as fans of Olivia Rodrigo will know that the same sort of things happen in the music video for Vampire – so the VMA performance was all scripted.

And fans were here for it, as they took to Twitter to comment on the performance, with one writing: "olivia rodrigo’s vma performance i’m so proud."

Another tweeted: "THE OLIVIA RODRIGO PERFORMANCE AT THE VMA !!!!!" whilst a third said: "Olivia Rodrigo really rocked out on that VMA stage! Hell yeah!!!"

Olivia looked stunning during the performance in a bright red bralet and matching pleated skirt, with knee-high leg warmers worn over sneakers.

Her makeup was vampy with smoky eye makeup and a slick of bright red lipstick, whilst her long dark hair tumbled around her shoulders.

After she left the stage, a blue curtain fell down and clips of her previous hits were played, before she made her grand return.

She then belted out her new track, Get Him Back, as she was joined on the stage by a group of dancers, dressed in pink, who performed around her.

Olivia was in the running for some big awards at the VMAs, including Best Pop, Song of the Year, and Video of the Year, however, she was pipped to the post on the first two by Taylor Swift.

Taylor swept the floor at the VMAs, as she won four awards including Best Video, for her song Anti-Hero.

Accepting the award, she said: "The fact that this is a fan-voted award means so much to me.

"I cannot believe it was a year ago at the VMAs that I announced the Midnights album, and all I have to say tonight is thank you. I'm blown away."

Despite being one of the world's biggest pop stars, Taylor was left fan-girling as iconic nineties pop band NSYNC reunited to present her with the award.

As they walked on to the stage, Taylor could be seen covering her hands with her mouth as her excitement was plain to see.
