Wheeler Dealers’ Mike Brewer breaks down in tears before live audience

Mike Brewer marks 20 years of Wheeler Dealers

Wheeler Dealers’ Mike Brewer broke down in tears during a special recording.

The host of the car restoration show, which airs on Discovery UK, was being paid tribute to on The Wheeler Dealers’ podcast for his 20 years on the programme earlier this month.

In the episode titled Mike Brewer Special: From Mini to Megastar, he and his co-host Marc Priestly, as well as former co-host Edd China, discussed key moments over the past two decades.

But it was one surprise message that led to the normally steely presenter losing his composure.

The 59-year-old got all choked up following a voice recording from his parents Roger Wilks and Doreen Fitzgerald gushing over his milestone achievement.

“Congratulations Mike and all the staff for the last 22 years, we are so proud of you,” said his elderly mother.

“Congratulations son. 20 successful years – who’d have thought,” his father chimed in. “You didn’t need to be a TV star for us to be proud of you,” he continued.

“We’ve always been proud of you. We love you very much. Love you lots.”

“Love you lots,” added his mum. Mike responded: “She’s so ill. My mum’s so ill. It’s unbelievable she done that so that was very sweet…”(sic)

He then started to well up, telling the live audience: “Of course I’m gonna cry. I’m [also] gonna cry because of this: 20 years of anything is a big deal and I can’t tell you how humble and grateful I am to all of you.

“Sorry, it’s just been an incredible ride and it’s not over. I can see the love and passion for Wheeler Dealers’ everywhere I turn.

“It’s you guys who put me where I am. You put Elvis and Anthony in the position we are and we can’t thank you enough for it. Keep staying faithful to the brand if you can.”

Mike also recently opened up about his marriage to wife Michelle while celebrating his motorcar repair television programme.

He said on another podcast episode this month that the show has had a serious impact on the pair’s relationship. “I’ve literally dedicated my life – 26 years actually – dedicated to this craft,” he admitted.

“To saving cars and restoring cars. And I feel like it’s given me an amazing life but it’s also come at the cost of my marriage… But there comes a time when I look and I think, maybe I should spend more time with my wife?

“She drives me mad but I love being with her. We took a month off last year for the first time in 26 years and we took a drive for 3,000 miles. It was the best 32 days I’ve had in the last 26 years.”

Luckily, Michelle loves cars just as much as he does and regularly gets involved with the podcast and attends car show award ceremonies with her husband.

Wheeler Dealers is on Discovery+ and Quest on Mondays at 9pm.
