Zoe Balls BBC show absence unveiled by co-star after addressing complaints

Zoe Ball was replaced by Gaby Roslin on the Friday edition of her BBC Radio Breakfast show after she pulled out due to sickness. Opening the programme this morning, Gaby addressed the host’s absence telling listeners: “Yes, I’m here today because poor old Zoe is not well. Get well soon Zoe!”

On Thursday’s show, Zoe, 53, revealed she was suffering from a cold, but pushed through and remained her usual upbeat self as she interacted with callers and her co-stars.

When asked how she was feeling by a caller, she replied: “Cold neck up, body down… the rest all fine. Feeling festive, Christmas party tomorrow night with the gang and I’m feeling almost ready for Christmas.”

Later on in the show, she excitedly discussed the team’s work Christmas do again with her co-star Richie as well as the upcoming Strictly Come Dancing final. Of the three remaining contestants Layton Williams, Ellie Leach and Bobby Brazier, she said she couldn’t wait to watch the “fabulous” stars perform three dances in the hope of winning the Glitterball trophy.

Fans were quick to comment on the hilarious moment on Instagram, as one wrote: “Please post more clips!!! What a fun interview, thank you for asking him about his birthday and feeding him with doughnuts.”

In favour of the request, the Radio 2 host agreed to play the song, but not everyone was impressed with the decision. After the song played, Zoe returned to the mic and said: “Hang on a minute, Richie – we’ve had some complaints.”

She then began to read out a message from a disgruntled listener from Manchester, who said: “Good morning, Zoe. Why didn’t you play, ‘Donald, Where’s Your Troosers?’” The host then went on to read out another message from a listener named Shirley who had the same issue. She fumed: “Shocked, shocked horrified and dreadfully upset that you didn’t play, Donald, ‘Where’s Your Troosers’.”

In a bid to please those complaining, Zoe confirmed that she would indeed play Andy Stewart’s iconic comedy track live on air. “Ladies,” she said, before hitting play on the song. “Just for you.” After playing the song, the presenter stayed silent and opted to play a Wallace and Gromit quote. The late Peter Sallis could be heard saying: “All’s well that ends well – that’s what I say.”
