Jail Time Records Champions Incarcerated African Musicians

The music industry is packed with rising creatives looking to make their mark. At times, success can depend on your background, region, or social status, but Jail Time Records is changing things up. The non-profit music label, founded in 2018, started inside the Central Prison of Douala as an independent project giving opportunities to incarcerated artists.

Jail Time Records quickly became a force to be reckoned with, establishing the first permanent recording studio inside prison territory. Over the past five years, the label has worked with countless detainees in music and film, enlisting its next star, JEJE, to debut his latest single, “The Life.”

Shot on abandoned shorelines, JEJE brings unapologetic African flair to his local community. He is pictured alongside his friends and family, rowing on open water while his companions dance the day away against cultural beats.
