Killer Mike Share Soulful Reinterpration of “Motherless," Teaming Up With Robert Glasper
Killer Mike has teamed up with Robert Glasper for a reworked version of “Motherless.” The track comes off of the rapper’s first solo album in 11 years, MICHAEL, which was released in June.
The rendition came together after Glasper heard the song for himself and was deeply touched it, having lost his own mother 20 years ago. Eryn Allen Kane, who features on the original version of the track, returns alongside Mike and Glasper. In fact, “Motherless” is entirely stripped down to just Mike and Kane’s vocals and Glasper’s piano.
The rework builds on Mike and Glasper’s collaboration last year, “Black Superheo” from the musician’s Black Radio III LP. The song arrived with a music video that gives a look at the trio hitting the studio together.
“Two years ago I was asked to get on “Black Superhero” by Robert Glasper,” Mike said. “The song was incredible and he’d go on to win a Grammy for the album. My only regret was that we weren’t in the same room together when we made it.”
“So when talks of him remixing “MOTHERLESS” came up it was a no brainer, only this time we wanted to be in the studio together along with Eryn Allen Kane.”
