Chris Packham calls for a radical reform of zoos:

The broadcaster, 62, called for a cultural change at zoos and wildlife parks.

He wants to see caged animals become champions for their wild counterparts, instead of being used for breeding.

Chris said: “I’m very clear that I think that our zoos do need to reform quite radically. The culture in zoos is basically about collecting.

“They still refer to the animals as ‘their collection’.

“They are complete anathemas, in the sense that a zoo, for instance, will open its doors and it will say, ‘come and have a fun day at the zoo’. Well, hold on, how can it be justified calling it ‘fun’ when it basically means you’re going to look at an animal in an enclosure?”

The presenter is supporting the conservation charity Born Free’s Beyond Zoos initiative, pushing for compassionate conservation, empowerment through education, and effective, non-invasive research.

The British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums was contacted for comment.
