Metallic makeup is trending for party season – here’s what you need to get the look

As Christmas creeps closer our diaries are starting to fill up with parties and events that require something a little more…glittery than our usual party looks.

Although the festive season usually requires a sequin dress or two, this year one of the biggest fashion trends around is metallics, which are perfect for adding a slightly more understated shimmer to your party ‘fit.

We’re firmly of the opinion that if it’s good enough for our outfits then it's good enough for our makeup, and we’re predicting that metallic makeup is going to be one of this winter’s go-to beauty trends for a more laid-back touch of seasonal sparkle.

Metallic makeup first took off earlier this year, and although we may have ditched it in favour of a more natural, glossy look over the summer, now winter is approaching it’s back with a bang.

The more grown up, low-key sister to the classic glitter and gloss looks that usually dominate our seasonal makeup looks, metallic makeup is all about muted shine and jewel-toned hues with plenty of silver and gold making an appearance.

If you’re not sure where to start with your metallic makeup look, we’ve found some of the perfect products to give your festive party glam a 2023 update. Subtle sparkles, this way…

Eyes

Your eyes are the easiest way to introduce metallics to your beauty look, and you can go all out with a foil finish, or simply add a subtle metallic sheen to the corner of your eyes, with liquid eyeshadows being the perfect pick for giving a slick, metal-looking finish and great colour payoff.

Beauty Bay does its own range of liquid eyeshadows, with the silver-toned Metamorphic Liquid Eyeshadow Duo, £14 here, perfect for nailing a frosty winter look, whilst the Malachite shade of its Liquid Crystal Eyeshadow, £5.60 here (was £7), adds a pop of metallic colour.

E.l.f’s Duochrome Liquid Eyeshadow, £8 here, is also perfect for adding a holographic, colour-shifting metallic finish to your eyeshadow look.

Lips

Your lips are another easy way to add a metallic sheen to your usual makeup routine, with plenty of brands doing their usual lip colours in a metallic finish.

Red lipstick is the perfect way to amp up even the most minimalist of outfits, and Kiko’s Metal Liquid Lip Colour in Classic Red, £10.99 here, gives your usual stand-out shade of rouge a trending metallic update.

If you prefer to let your eyes make the statement, a metallic nude colour like MAC’s Retro Matte Liquid Lipcolour Metallics in Bronze Rose, £24 here, will give the classic nude a hint of shimmer without relying on sticky glosses.

Face

Prefer to keep the shimmer strictly to your skin? We’ve got you. Giving your complexion a radiant, metallic finish can help highlight the high points of your face like your cheekbones, nose and brow bones, whilst still giving an understated finish.

Whether you’re keeping your makeup natural-looking or going for a dark vampy glam, giving your skin a metallic finish is the perfect addition to your beauty look.

Add a metallic sheen using a liquid highlighter, like ICONIC London’s Rollaway Glow, £18.75 here (was £25), which comes in three different shades to create a delicate glowy finish on your skin. If you prefer a powder, Illamasqua’s Beyond Powder, £25.50 here (was £34), adds a metallic glow to your cheekbones, whilst Laura Mercier’s Face Illuminator Highlighting Powder, £27.65 here (was £39), has a buildable powder formula that means you can pick the level of metallic glow you want.

It’s not just highlighters that helps add a festive sheen – your blusher can, too, with Ciate London’s Glow-To Illuminating Blush, £22 here, containing ultra-fine highlighting pearls that reflect the light to give you the perfect metallic finish.
