Rare 50p coin worth 300 times its face value – do you have one in your pocket? | The Sun

BRITS are being urged to check their pockets after a rare 50p coin worth more than 300 times its value was sold for a pretty profit online.

The rare coin was released in 2009 to mark 250 years since Kew Gardens opened in 1759.

Only 200,000 copies were made, making the 50p coin very valuable on the resale market.

The stunning coin features the Chinese Padoga and a portrait of the late Queen Elizabeth II.

On eBay, the coin sold for an astounding £172 on Monday – so if you have one in your wallet, you could be in for a hefty payday.

The commemoration coin is the most valuable 50p coin in circulation due to the low amount produced.

It usually sells for £156 on average, but one seller made a whopping £700 online.

The real value of these particular coins can be a bit of a minefield as it can depend on demand, sentiment and ultimately how much a buyer will pay.

Its low mintage has helped the coin rank as one of the top 10 rarest coins in circulation, according to the Royal Mint.

The Kew Gardens coin is also number one in Changechecker's most recent 50p scarcity index, a position it's held for years as one of the most sought after.
