The four box method is the hack you need to get your home tidy this weekend
With the summer holidays over and Christmas on the way, it’s the perfect time to give your home a good old clear out.
Not only will you be able to make room for presents and festive decorations, you can also make a bit of cash by selling items you no longer need.
Regardless of whether you live alone or have a large brood to tidy up after, you may struggle knowing where to start. When looking over the possessions you’ve accumulated over the years, how do you work out what should stay and what should go?
Minimalist gurus like Marie Kondo have popularised a range of methods to clean up your space. But sometimes a simpler approach works best.
The four box method is a straightforward way to get rid of the mess around your house – and as the name suggests, all you need to get started are four boxes.
Rather than making big plans to turn your place into an expertly-arranged showhome, do each room separately and separate each room into manageable chunks.

Take on every drawer, shelf, wardrobe or cupboard one by one, as this will allow you to check things off instead of feeling deflated by the mammoth task ahead of you.
Then the four boxes come into play.
Dan Hnatkovskyy, housing expert and co-founder and CEO of NewHomesMate, explains: ‘Sort your belongings into four boxes: Keep, Donate/Sell, Trash, and Relocate.
‘This encourages quick decisions and prevents you from getting stuck on individual items.’

Try not to overthink what goes in which box; keep or relocate things that have sentimental value or which you know you’ll use again, bin anything that nobody else would want, and donate or sell items which you no longer need but which you reckon could be of use to another person.
After each area has been sorted, put back what’s staying and move the ‘relocate’ box contents to where they belong.
Additionally, consider waiting until you’ve finished a full room or even your whole home before deciding what in the donate/sell box should go to charity or be sold, as you’ll have a clearer idea when everything is all together.
In no time, you’ll be a seasoned organisation pro and be able to enjoy a clearer, cleaner space. It really is as easy as one, two, three, four.
