Jermaine Jenas had shopping sent to The One Show set to hide habit from wife

TV presenter Jermaine Jenas has revealed he once owned a whopping 750 pairs of trainers – and even got them delivered to The One Show so his wife didn’t find out.

The ex-footballer has just finished filming a new documentary about the world’s most expensive trainers and it turns out he was the ideal person for the job.

Jermaine says: "At one point I was probably around the 750 pairs mark but I’m now down to about 250 because I’m trying to be a bit more niche with the ones I collect.

“It was a silly number but it was my passion at that time.

“I’ve collected trainers my whole life, I love my trainers. It’s the one thing I have to sneak around in my house and buy.

“My wife has now found out I get them delivered to The One Show instead of at home so that ship’s sailed.”

Jermaine’s most prized pair have a nostalgic connection. He says: "They’re a pair of Air Max 95s, neon green and grey. They were £110, the first pair of trainers I got when I was kid.

“I travelled from Nottingham to London to get them with money I’d saved up.

“I remember that time and how difficult it was to get them and how much they mattered to me. I’ve got them in a box and I’ll never wear them again.”

The 40-year-old admits life was hard growing up and he often survived on just four bowls of cereal a day.

He says: “When I was younger it was difficult. My diet was limited as a kid based on the level of income in the house and how hard my mum was working.

“My mum worked two, three, jobs, I’d come back from school, let myself in and fend for myself until she got back.

“A lot of the time that would mean I’d have another bowl of cereal. That’s where I really sympathise with parents because I lived that life as a kid.”

It’s why he’s backing M&S Food’s pledge to help families make healthier and more affordable nutrition choices.

It comes after their Eat Well, Play Well report found only 20% of Brits feel they have a consistently healthy relationship with food.

Jermaine says: “Everyone’s just trying to survive. The more we try to educate kids and parents on how important eating well is for their health, mental health and day-to-day life, the better.”

The dad-of-four got into cooking himself after he retired aged 32 in 2016, as it helped give him a role at home. Now his specialities include lobster linguine and beef Wellington.

Jermaine says: “It was just trying to have a function, after going from playing football every day to feeling like I was a lodger in my own house.”

He’s also busy with The One Show, which has just welcomed Roman Kemp to the presenting team alongside Jermaine and Alex Jones after Ronan Keating’s departure.

This limited time promotion also comes just in time for new premieres from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, National Geographic and more. These include FX’s Welcome To Wrexham S2 (13 September) and The Kardashians S4 (28 September)

Starting September 6 through September 20, new and returning customers in the UK can subscribe to Disney+ for £1.99/month for three months – an £18 saving compared to the regular monthly price for three months

There’s just one small problem. “He’s a Gooner!” jokes Jermaine.

The pair were pals already and the ex-Newcastle and Spurs star says: “I know Roman as a mate and as a presenter he’s very good at what he does. We feel like the show is in a really good place and I think Roman adds to that.

“The beauty of what we have is we actually like each other. We have a laugh. You can find yourself at work and you tolerate each other, but we’ve been out for meals, we’ve had drinks, we’ve socialised together with our families

“And with Roman it’s going to be exactly like that. You’re constantly having a laugh off air as well as on."
