Love Islands Will Young turns his back on showbiz parties to focus on farming

Love Island farmer Will Young has called for more help to sustain his industry after turning his back on showbiz parties to pull his wellies back on.

Already a TikTok sensation before he joined the reality show’s most recent winter series, Will’s videos of life on his family farm caught the attention of telly producers.

But he admits it’s not an easy business to be in. Will says: “The younger generation in farming is seeing a massive decrease because of the prices farmers are offered.

“My brother has come home to give my dad extra help – the last thing we want to do is sell the farm as it’s been in the family since 1850. A lot of farmers are worried about sustainability and using less fertiliser.”

And help from artificial intelligence isn’t an option. Will adds: “AI is not affordable – it is out of a farmer’s price range. The whole world is trying to find sustainable and economical ways to move forward and while I’ve seen robot dogs, there are simpler solutions.”

Earlier this month, the Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced the second leg of high speed train line HS2 – between Birmingham and Manchester – was to be scrapped.

But the London to Birmingham route has already devastated the Buckinghamshire region Will calls home. In his new book For The Love Of Farming: Farmer Will’s Guide To Life In The Fields, he shares the reality of being a 23-year-old farmer.

He says: “It’s a deep dive into what I do on the farm. HS2 has ruined farms down the road from me, split them in half and farmers don’t feel they were paid fairly for the damage. At the village I live in there were 12 working farms when my dad was a boy, now it’s two. A lot of meat is sold abroad – why is it flown from the UK when it could be sold in the UK?”

After falling in love in the famous villa, Will’s Aussie girlfriend Jessie Wynter agreed to move in with him so he could return to the day job. The plan is for them to split their time between the UK and Oz.

Will was also shocked to be axed from the Love Island boys’ WhatsApp group when he turned down a reunion dinner invite in London because of his farming responsibilities.

Will says: “I wouldn’t say we hang out together with the other islanders. Jessie and I are focused on each other rather than partying. She helps out on the farm and is busy with social media. Getting kicked out of the group chat validated to me they weren’t people I’d put energy into. For me, it’s not a loss. It was amazing coming out with someone like Jessie who had the same mindset as me.

“We both keep to ourselves and I’ve grown as a person, matured – I’m a better version of myself.” And he revealed the couple will be spending Christmas in Australia. Will says: “It’s something I never thought I would do – cricket on the beach, a barbecue instead of roast turkey. Jessie has made a big adjustment coming to the UK. Family is important to us so we’ll be in Australia for Christmas as we’re splitting our time between both countries.”

Spin-off series Love Island Games will hit screens soon, bringing together former romance-seekers from the UK, America and elsewhere but Will won’t be tuning in. He added: “I’m not a big TV watcher and hadn’t seen the show before I went on it but I’ll see it over social media I’m sure.”
