All Creatures Great and Small newcomer’s blunder during first day
All Creatures Great and Small season 4 trailer
All Creatures Great and Small viewers will say hello to Richard Carmody (played by James Anthony-Rose) in the upcoming series, but the star has already suffered an onset blunder.
Richard is joining Skeldale House as a student veterinarian and replacement for Tristan Farnon (Callum Woodhouse) after he was called up to join the war during last year’s Christmas special.
His arrival into the Dales is a tricky one, being inexperienced and a little too confident for James Herriot’s (Nicholas Ralph) and Siegfried Farnon’s (Samuel West) liking.
However, unlike his character, James Anthony-Rose suffered an awkward blunder during his first day and first time handling one of the show’s animals.
Speaking to Express.co.uk and other press, James explained his first experience with animals: “I think it was a tortoise.

“He was lovely, he was called George and the character’s name was Bernard, and that was the first animal that Carmody treated.
“I had to handle Bernard and actually he was very quick on his feet! I know tortoises are known for sitting very still but no…
“We had to keep replacing him on the examination table! He was faster than a lot of the animals we worked with actually, he was very keen to explore all corners!
“I had a day on a farm with a veterinary consultant who introduced me to a cow and a horse and I listened to their heartbeats.”

The tortoise wasn’t the only issue, as James noted that many of the animals let him know they’d had enough and were done for the day.
Speaking about an incident with a calf, he added: “They say never work with children or animals and we worked with both in this show and all of them have been great.
“The animals are brilliant when they are brilliant, but when they have had enough they will let you know they have had enough.
“There was a calf that was… it needed to be lying down quite a lot and there is only so many times you can pretend to be getting surgery done on you when you know you are well.
“I was very sympathetic to when an animal felt ‘No I don’t need to be doing this’ but I think we got it on take one.”
All Creatures Great and Small returns Friday, October 5 from 9pm on Channel 5.
