Amanda Holden discovers ‘diary full of filth’ from 1666 in sex documentary
Amanda Holden teases Sky History's Sex: A Bonkers History
Amanda Holden and co-star Dan Jones dig deep into the history of sex and found that Great Fire of London diarist Samuel Pepys had a diary “full of filth”.
During their exploration, Amanda and Dan will uncover how attitudes towards sex and sexuality have evolved throughout the ages, from the origination of the first contraceptive in ancient Egypt to swinging in 70’s suburban Britain.
Discussing why she thought a series like this is important now when sex is such a hot topic, Amanda explained: “We’re looking at things from a very light-hearted point of view.
“It is a bit of light relief, a bit of fun, it’s knowledgeable. We’re studying the past and the impact that it’s had on society now and how things have changed because of rebellion and because of women.
“I mean, when we were studying the Regency period and Queen Charlotte, I was going, ‘Oh, I love Bridgerton,’ which is a very tongue-in-cheek drama. It’s not all true, but a lot of what Queen Charlotte did is true.

“I think that’s the thing I learned, and I think that’s the thing that people will learn. They’ll be like, ‘Blimey, you wouldn’t have believed that she could have done that, or they could have behaved in that way’.”
She continued: “Even Samuel Pepys, his diaries get taught in schools for the Great Fire of London, but there are so many pages of that diary that we dare not read and we don’t know about because they were talking about what else he got up to in London during that time.
“But as a diarist, he’s just upheld as this person that kept an eye on the Fire of London. Yet at the same time, his whole diary is full of filth! It’s just hysterical how we’ve glossed over that bit!”
During their exploration of sex through the ages, Amanda and Dan will also meet the experts in the history of intimacy.
