BBC Breakfasts Jon Kay airs concern for co-star after she disappears

Carol Kirkwood disappears while presenting the weather

BBC Breakfast star Jon Kay interrupted a live broadcast to express concern over his co-presenter’s “disappearance” from the show on Tuesday.

During meteorologist Carol Kirkwood’s weather segment, she suddenly vanished from the screen to be replaced by a blank chart with only her voice being heard. This led to Jon shouting: “Carol, Carol!”

When the BBC veteran was visible again, Jon joked: “Thank God. You disappeared for a moment there.”

“I know,” Carol replied, before explaining: “I accidentally put that chart up. It’s entirely my fault – nobody else’s.” “It’s a magic trick,” added Jon. “It’s brilliant.”

His co-host Tina Daheley waded in but focused on the weather. She said: “I’m enjoying those double figures. Very exciting.” To which Carol replied: “You know, Tina, I thought you were saying, ‘I was enjoying not seeing you in vision.'”

Tina: “Never, never.” The mishap was not the only screen gaffe during the broadcast as viewers also spotted another blunder.

When Tina and Jon spoke to chief political correspondent Henry Zeffman about the breaking news that Home Secretary James Cleverly was headed to Rwanda to sign a new asylum treaty – the programme banner stated he was speaking on location from “Wesminster” instead of “Westminster”.

Taking to X, one viewer wrote: “Sort your titles out!”, while another agreed: “We spotted the same thing.”

Sally Nugent, who usually presents the show between Monday and Wednesday, has been absent for the past two weeks.

Although a reason for her absence wasn’t specified, it could be down to the fact that Sally is taking part in this year’s Strictly Come Dancing Christmas special.

The television presenter has been partnered with Italian dancer Graziano Di Prima, who was originally paired with Zara McDermott in the main show before they were eliminated a few weeks ago.

Sally confirmed the news with some sweet snaps of herself with Graziano on the Strictly set. She penned: “I was in need of a little pick me up when the lovely people at Strictly called. They kindly suggested I might like to learn to dance with @grazianodiprima in time for Christmas.

“I am definitely not a dancer – but I will try my best. And there is no one better to learn with. Join us on our Christmas adventure and I guarantee that we will all have fun along the way. Ciao.”

BBC Breakfast airs from 6am to 9am each morning on BBC One.
