GMB fans ‘switch off’ over ‘cringeworthy’ debate as they plead ‘Move on’

GMB: VAR error is discussed

Good Morning Britain fans ‘switched off’ from Monday’s ITV show over a debate about the VAR error during a football match over the weekend.

Liverpool FC has said “sporting integrity has been undermined” by the controversy during Saturday’s 2-1 loss to Tottenham.

Hosts Susanna Reid and Ed Balls fronted a debate over the issue, but fans weren’t pleased by the coverage.

Many took to social media to question why so much focus had been given to the sporting issue, with Twitter user @southeast_watch fuming: “Why is @gmb going on about a stupid #var decision it’s not of any interest or national news there’s more pressing things going on and they’re banging on about a stupid football game #gmb turned over to bbc1.”

@tighabhinn added: “FX sake! A disallowed penalty is GMB’s top story !???? PATHETIC !!! #GMB.” (sic)

@rng8899 shared: “#gmb we don’t give a s*** about var now move on.”

“#GMB This is seriously the news; a wrongly disallowed goal?” asked @BoyCharioteer.

@SnappingSandwe1 penned: “#gmb covering football is so cringeworthy and amateurish!”

@ManaboutLdn commented: “Just call @ITV one the new sports channel. The whole weekend dedicated to sport and now @GMB #GMB allocating more time to a VAR decision in football than any other news item.”

Others disagreed though, with @rwgerai writing: “Ed tried and failed to get an answer – Why couldn’t both managers agree to let Liverpool score after realising it’s been a catastrophic mistake?”

During the Good Morning Britain debate, a guest on the show remarked: I think it’s one of those situations, Susanna, that come the end of the season if, for example, Liverpool were to miss out on the title by a point, everyone will talk about it.

“It will be, ‘We missed out because of a referee issue, because of a VAR issue.’

“It’s interesting to see that Liverpool have actually put out a statement.”

She continued: “Now, I’m quite surprised by this, because the statement almost suggests they want something to happen, and there’s been no precedent in the Premier League for a game to be replayed -“

“I’d want something to happen,” Susanna cut in.

“The problem is though, game in, game out we see problems on the pitch,” the guest explained.

“So many of them, whether it’s a red card issue, whatever it might be and I think the problem is, this opens up a can of worms because every single manager will be disappointed in something that has happened in their game.”

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV.
