Huge Netflix change comes into force today – and its the end of an era
Netflix has made a major change to its streaming service after 25 years.
Since 1998, entertainment giants have offered mail-order DVDs as part of its subscription service.
With distribution centers across the US in California, Texas, Georgia and New Jersey millions of titles were shipping in the iconic red envelopes.
Despite its fierce competitors such as Blockbuster and the streaming surge, Netflix set a record with 4.9 million DVDs in a single 2011 day.
By the end, they revealed more than 5 billion shipments had been recorded during the duration of the service.

Netflix confirmed its distribution services’ end with a post from its official X account.
Addressing their 1 million followers, the company shared: “Netflix will mail its final DVD on September 29, 2023.
“But the red envelope remains an enduring symbol of our love of entertainment,” and shared a nostalgic video of its early days on the final date, captioned: “Long live the red envelope.”
While experts have dubbed the change as “the end of an era,” fans have opted to keep their final DVD as a “souvenir.”

In a blog post, Netflix’s managing director Ted Sarandos reflected on the “incredible 25 run” and said: “Our goal has always been to provide the best service for our members.”
“But as the business continues to shrink that’s going to become increasingly difficult. So we want to go out on a high, and will be shipping our final discs on September 29, 2023.
“To everyone who ever added a DVD to their queue or waited by the mailbox for a red envelope to arrive: thank you.”
Users were also left emotional by the DVD service’s demise and took to social media with sadness.
