Caitriona Balfe has opened up about a tough on-set moment during season seven of Outlander.
Speaking at the ATX TV Festival back in June, the 43-year-old Irish actress was asked to name her high and low moments on season seven.
Claire Fraser star Balfe said: “I’m going to be a bit vague because it’s stuff I can’t really, really talk about but I think it’s episode 11.
“There’s a scene, there’s a sequence of scenes that were really, really challenging.
“I think my [low point] was trying to figure out how we were going do it and it was really tough.
“It was also a tough time personally because it was not that long after my dad had passed and it was a very hard thing to sort of get myself into the headspace for and there was a big struggle about how we were going to do it.
“There was lots of notes going back and forth.”
She went on to say about her highlight: “This was a big thing to the writers and [intimacy coordinator] Vanessa [Coffey] and stuff but we figured out a way to do it.
“And I think there’s always that thing of when you find something that’s really, really hard and tough […].

“I think that’s the first time in my life with work and especially on the show that I was like, ‘I actually don’t know how I’m going to do this’ and it was very hard to sometimes figure that stuff out but once you do, I think that always feels like a really good thing.”
Balfe is not just the show’s lead with co-star Sam Heughan, she also serves as an executive producer.
On season seven, she also upped her credits to director when she worked on several episodes and shot some of Sophie Skelton’s scenes.

Reflecting on directing Skelton, 29, Balfe said: “When you have a really strong relationship with somebody and then you get to work with them in this other way and everybody has been so supportive like all of our crew everybody.”
But Bafle admitted she was yet to get behind the camera and director fellow lead Heughan, also 43.
The star previously said of directing on the eighth and final outing: “I am going to be directing an episode for next season.” Adding she was: “Very excited, very terrified.” However, Heughan served up the perfect response.
Balfe also shared a shocking interview question Heughan was once asked during an interview which left her gobsmacked.
Outlander seasons 1-7 are available to stream on Starz in the USA and on Lionsgate+ in the UK
