The One Show sparks backlash as viewers fume over torturous Beatles special

The One Show: The Beatles ‘The Last Song’ celebrated on special show

The One Show has come under fire for dedicating almost an entire extended episode to the release of the last-ever single by The Beatles.

Wednesday’s episode was mainly dedicated to the song called Now And Then, which will be released on Friday, and is the last ever track to feature the entire “Fab Four”.

Announcing the single, Sir Paul McCartney said in a statement: “It’s quite emotional. And we all play on it, it’s a genuine Beatles recording.

“In 2023, to still be working on Beatles’ music, and about to release a new song the public haven’t heard, I think it’s an exciting thing,” he said.

Alongside a film, charting how the history-making record was made, the show also featured Giles Martin, son of The Beatles’ producer George and producer of this song, comedian and actor John Bishop and Lauren Laverne in the studio discussing the track.

However, viewers of the One show were nonplussed by the extended offering which showed exactly how the record was made, particularly because they didn’t even get to hear it.

Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, they made their feelings known. A user called @ichris139 said: “So after all that we don’t get to hear The Beatles’ new song? #TheOneShow.” (sic)

@grumpyguy64 ranted at the end of the show: “Finally it’s f****** over and the b******* didn’t even play the full f****** song #theoneshow.” (sic)

A viewer with the handle @DSpringate said: “So you big it up all week then don’t play the actual whole song #TheOneShow.” (sic)

@fridaytime chimed in: “#TheOneShow Wtf. Just sat through the torturous One Show, hyped for the new Beatles’ single and they’re not even playing it. Total con.” (sic)

Others took umbrage at the extended edition as it meant that the BBC’s flagship soap EastEnders started later than usual.

@grumpyguy64 queried: “Why can’t they have just played this on Friday when EastEnders is not on #theoneshow.”

However, other viewers loved the segment with @Gazwrigley writing: “That film on tonight’s #theoneshow about The Beatles’ new track was phenomenal. #thenandnow.”

Meanwhile, @SteveHyett noted: “That Beatles film was stunning. Absolutely amazing. I know it’s not the last ever Beatles song, that belongs to the near-mythical Carnival of Light which will surely escape someday, but this does feel like a significant moment in their history. #TheOneShow.”

The One Show airs on weeknights at 7pm on BBC One.
