Tom Morello Goes Solo To Accept Rage Against The Machine's Rock Hall Induction
Guitarist Tom Morello went onstage along to accept induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame on behalf of Rage Against The Machine on Friday (November 3) at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
Morello accepted the induction from Ice-T as other band members Zack de la Rocha, Tim Commerford and Brad Wilk were not in attendance.
“You can’t impress me with normal stuff. You gotta impress me with stuff like suing the U.S. State Department for using their music in Guantanamo Bay for torturing. Who does that? Rage Against the Machine does that,” Ice-T said in his speech.
“Or how about 1993, pulling up at Lollapalooza butt naked with duct tape, protesting against the [Parents Music Resource Center]?” he continued. “Who does that? Rage Against the Machine does that. I respect the hell out of this band.”
In his speech, Morello referenced friction within Rage Against The Machine, saying, “Like most bands, we have differing perspectives on a lot of things, including being inducted into the Rock Hall.”
“My perspective is that tonight is a great opportunity to celebrate the music and the mission of the bandโto celebrate the fifth member of the band, which is Rage Against the Machine’s incredible fans,” he added. “The only reason we are here and the best way to celebrate this music is for you to carry on that mission and that message.”
After being in line for Rock Hall honors on four previous occasions (in 2018, 2019, 2021 and 2022), Rage Against the Machine finally made it to the Hall of Fame this year alongside Willie Nelson, Sheryl Crow, Kate Bush, Missy Elliott, George Michael, and the Spinners.
