Apple phone feature saves mans life after his car flips over

A man has credited a free Apple feature for getting him speedy access to emergency services after his car flipped over in a remote area of Canada earlier this year.

Ryo Lu had been driving to Lake Abraham, Canada to take some pictures with a friend when disaster struck and they were left with their car trapped upside down in a snowbank.

Lu said: “The car just started drifting and then it went completely out of control — it flipped over on the snowbank next to the road and we were stuck there.”

The San Francisco-based 31-year-old soon remembered his iPhone was equipped with Apple’s Emergency SOS satellite service, which allowed him to contact the firefighting department to help them out.

Speaking to People he explained: “It was kind of cool because you start pointing the phone to the sky. And then it started to gather key information for the emergency responders.”

He said a passerby invited him and his friend to warm up in their car, where they still waited for two hours before emergency services finally arrived.

Lu added: “If we drove a little bit further ahead, I think there was a cliff… we could’ve been dead. This was a happy ending.”

He explained the Apple feature was very easy to use and allowed him to call for help even when his phone had absolutely no service.

He continued: “It’s designed in a way that is just super simple. It has really clear diagrams.

“You turn the phone and then it shows you where the satellite is, and then when it’s in a good spot, it turns green.

“And then you can tap some buttons to answer questions, and get in touch with the emergency services.”

Lu said he felt “really grateful” to be alive, and credited the free feature for ensuring he and his friend survived.

Apple made its Emergency SOS satellite service available on all its iPhone 14 models last year to allow users to message emergency services when cellular and Wi-Fi coverage is scarce.

The company has since announced they are extending free access to the feature for another year in hopes of helping save more lives.

For older models, Apple users can share their location via satellite on the Find My Phone app while Check In allows phone owners to confirm with family and friends they have safely reached their destination.
