Docs gave me days to live – but now Im celebrating my 50th, says Jonnie Irwin

Jonnie Irwin was told he had just days to live after he was diagnosed with cancer – but months later he is heading to Spain to celebrate his 50th birthday.

The former A Place In The Sun star feared he wouldn't make it to his twins' third birthday. Crippled with pain in a hospice bed, things weren't looking good.

But Escape To The Country star Jonnie has amazed doctors with his strength. Then, he weighed just six stone and barely had the strength to walk.

His wife Jess took him back to their family home and they feared they would be spending their final days together. Six months on, they are now set to make more memories in Spain for Jonnie's birthday.

Jonnie told The Sun: "I'd never thought about dying, despite the cancer, and Jess and I don't talk about it. But at my weakest point I thought, 'This is it, this is the beginning of the end.'"

He refused to give up and, once home, made himself get out of bed. He drank protein shakes to try and build up his strength and spent hours in an oxygen tent to help too.

Jonnie's weight has gone up to 8st 6lb and he is determined to live as long as possible. He's undergone chemotherapy and radiation treatment after a 1.5cm growth was found on his brain.

He said: "I won't let cancer define me. A friend of mine told me, 'Your body achieves what your mind achieves,' and I want to live by that."
