All Creatures Great and Small star gives insight into Mrs Pumphrey’s love life

All Creatures Great and Small season 4 trailer

All Creatures Great and Small’s Patricia Hodge, who plays Mrs Pumphrey, recently gave an insight into what she thought her character’s background was and into her relationship with Mr Pumphrey.

Not much is known about Mrs Pumphrey’s background, which is something that Patricia Hodge has had to think about in order to get into character.

Speaking to Express.co.uk and other press, she explained: “She is eccentric and I think she absolutely represents a certain kind of English woman that lives in a certain kind of house.

“She is a relic of, you know, a history that we have in this country of people from the landed gentry. I feel with her though that she wasn’t so much born into it but that she married very well.

“I think she married an industrialist – that is my take – and that he made a lot of money and bought a trophy house.

“She does talk about when she acquired the house and how her husband wanted to fill it with animals and that he gave her the first Pekingese.

“So that comes out in it and she talks very briefly about what happened.”

As series four continues, Mrs Pumphrey and Helen Herriot (Rachel Shenton) grow close and end up helping one another in their times of need.

Rachel also recently spoke with Express.co.uk about Helen’s relationship with Mrs Pumphrey and paid a sweet tribute to her friendship with Patricia.

Touching on scenes she shared with Patricia, Rachel said: “I am thrilled because I have not really had too many scenes, certainly not one-on-one with Patricia.

“So that was a pleasure and it was just sort of a moment of, the female alliance without giving too much of the story away, those two women knew what that feeling was at that moment.

“And then it stays throughout the series and you see their journey a little bit. She was really instrumental in a decision that Helen had to make actually.

“It is just a pleasure working with Patricia, she really knows her stuff and she is really great to work with and good fun so yeah I really enjoyed that bit.”

All Creatures Great and Small airs Thursday from 9pm on Channel 5.
