BBC Breakfast host issues apology as guest suffers awkward blunder live on air

BBC Breakfast star Jon Kay was forced to issue an apology to a show guest live on air after a technical blunder left the morning show in silence.

Jon was back on the famous red sofa on Tuesday (October 3) alongside Sally Nugent and the pair woke up the nation with the latest news headlines from across the globe. At the top of the show, they welcomed Lisa Stockdale, from the Jenner Institute at Oxford University, onto the programme to discuss the development in the cheap malaria vaccine project but things didn't quite go to plan.

Jon kicked off the interview by Lisa "How significant could this vaccine be?" However, due to technical difficulties, Lisa couldn't be heard as she gave her answer to the question. After a long pause, Jon said: "I'm sorry, we don't have sound on you there. I don't know wether Lisa, despite all her medical expertise and scientific genius, has maybe left it muted. We've all done that."

However, within minutes, Lisa returned and discussed the malaria vaccine update, which has been developed by the University of Oxford and is only the second malaria vaccine to be developed. Malaria kills mostly babies and infants, and has been one of the biggest scourges on humanity.

There are already agreements in place to manufacture more than 100 million doses a year. It has taken more than a century of scientific effort to develop effective vaccines against malaria. The disease is caused by a complex parasite, which is spread by the bite of blood-sucking mosquitoes. It is far more sophisticated than a virus as it hides from our immune system by constantly shape-shifting inside the human body.

The blunder comes just one day after Jon accidentally called comedian Les Dennis the wrong name following his exit from Strictly over the weekend. During Monday's (October 2) episode, Sally and Jon discussed Les' departure but the latter instead called him "Len Dennis" after getting mixed up with their guest Lenny Henry.

Before showing a clip of Les and his dance partner Nancy XU on the ballroom floor, Jon said: "If you haven't watched last night's Strictly Come Dancing yet. here's a spoiler. We're going to tell you who was kicked out. So just close your ears and eyes for a couple of seconds."

"It was Les Dennis," Sally chimed in. "The first to be voted out of this year's competition. This was his Samba with his partner Nancy Xu. It failed to get him through the first round of eliminations…I honestly thought he would be in it for a while."

"But the standard is so high, isn't it?" Jon noted. "Some of them are too good. They're gonna be like the professionals by week five. Some of them are already," Sally beamed. "At least Len can have his Saturday night's at home now," Jon said before Sally called out his mistake.

"Les," Sally corrected as Jon laughed: "Yes, I have got Lenny in my ear." Brushing off the error, Sally went on: "I still think Les will go and watch and take part in the group dances."
