Charlie breaks down in dad's arms in Hollyoaks and opens up: 'I love you Darren'

Charlie Dean (Charlie Behan) gave dad Darren Osborne (Ashley Taylor Dawson) the tightest of hugs in Hollyoaks on Wednesday (September 6), telling him how much he loved him.

The teen, as viewers know, attempted to take his own life earlier this week, with one traumatic and upsetting event after another having impacted on his mental health.

Darren managed to save him in the nick of time, with Charlie later taken to hospital with secondary drowning. Despite initially refusing to seek help for his depression, the school boy reconsidered after a heart-to-heart with Oscar (Noah Holdsworth), who pleaded with him not to ‘go’.

Wednesday’s E4 offering of the Channel 4 soap saw Charlie discharged and, to Darren’s dismay, he had no intention of getting in touch with a therapist, throwing the contact details in the bin.

Darren urged him to at least keep hold of the details, putting them away in a safe place. Charlie thought long and hard about what he’d said and, after a heart-to-heart with Phoenix Hathaway (Tylan Grant), he called Nancy (Jessica Fox) to explain what had happened.

Nancy urged him to come out to America for a change of scenery, but Charlie declined, telling Darren that he’d much rather stay with him, which left Darren somewhat touched as he approached his son and gave him a big hug.

‘I love you Darren’, said an emotional Charlie, much to the shock to Darren, who replied by telling the teen that he loves him too.

Taking the advice he’d received from Phoenix, Charlie started to open up, revealing to Darren that he doesn’t think he wanted to die.

‘It felt like I couldn’t cope with one thing and then something else would happen and I couldn’t cope with that – and then something else and something else and something else,’ he started, discussing his feelings.

‘It was all getting stacked up. It was like I didn’t have the tools to cope with anything at all’.

Darren, fighting tears, was quick to offer him comfort, telling him to come to him if he ever feels like that again.

Charlie promised that he would do so. ‘You have got the tools’, added the loving dad. ‘Maybe you’ve just not found them yet.’

The two shared another hug as Charlie thanked Darren for all of his love and support.

Hollyoaks continues on Thursday September 7 at 7pm on E4 or stream the next episode from midnight.
