Coronation Street fans are convinced they have worked out the real reason behind Bernie Winter’s unexpected prison sentence on the ITV cobbles.
During Monday’s (November 13) visit to Weatherfield, fans caught up with the beloved matriarch (played by Jane Hazlegrove) as she attended her court hearing. The blonde beauty was charged with handling stolen goods with her dodgy business partner Big Garth last month.
At first, the doting mum was full of confidence that she would plead not guilty and come out with a clean record. But her solicitor quickly informed her that they had video evidence of her caught in the act and encouraged her to plead guilty.
Things quickly went from bad to worse when Bernie was handed a six-month prison sentence, leaving Paul devastated that he could be forced to say goodbye to his mum sooner than he planned. Doctors have given the newlywed a life-expectancy of six to 12 months left to live, but his condition is rapidly detonating.
Despite pleading with the judge about his terminal condition, there was no change to her sentence, much to her family’s disappointment. Now, fans believe they have worked out the real reason why Bernie will be absent from our screens for the remainder of the year.
Many viewers were convinced that the 55-year-old could be the next star set to join I'm a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! after her co-star Alan Halsall was forced to pull out due to an injury. After watching the heartbreaking scenes play out, viewers flooded to the social media platform X – formerly known as Twitter – to share their suspicions behind her well-timed exit online.
One user penned: “Well, that’s Bernie doing I’m A Celeb #Corrie.” Another echoed: “She’s off to do I’m A Celeb I think [thinking emoji] #corrie”.
A third echoed: “Is Bernie going into the jungle? That’s why she’s disappearing for a while.” With the actress away from the show for the rest of the year while her character pays for their mistakes behind bars, it would leave her plenty of time to take part in the Australian reality show.
