Corries Michael star teases villain twist as hes arrested after Stephen death

Coronation Street’s Michael Bailey has found himself in hot water over the past few weeks following cobbles killer Stephen Reid’s shocking death.

The serial killer’s reign of terror came to an end on the ITV soap at the start of the month after Peter Barlow ran him over moments before he could escape in a getaway car. But officers are convinced that the Canadian killer wasn’t working alone and arrested Michael under suspicion of working with him to defraud Underworld.

As the hunk’s world slips into freefall, actor Ryan Russell has lifted the lid on how this has impacted his loveable character. Speaking to Daily Star and other press, the 32-year-old actor confessed that he often saw Stephen and Carla Connor as parental figures in the company.

He told us: “I think maybe you could consider that Stephen was a kind of a father figure with the age gap. There was definitely that sort of relationship, it was a unique partnership between them with the ages but somehow it worked.

“He was looking to impress him and also to look up to him just to kind of aspire to be Stephen – even though he’s not the best person to aspire to be.” The soap star went on to reveal how losing his job has left him struggling to cope.

Ryan continued: “I feel like he’s finally progressing in life and being a success with his designs. He just got promoted, everyone kind of respected him in Underworld so to lose that, I think he’s scared to go back to square one again.

“And then the added pressure of being a single dad with Gloria financially, it’s going to be very hard for him. I think it will harden him because he’s invested a lot in people before and been burnt hard by Grace, now Stephen and Ronnie – many, many people.”

Arguably, the biggest heartbreak for Stephen was his boss’ trust in him, after he accidentally allowed Stephen to steal £250,000 from the company shortly before his death. He went on: “There’s a lot on his mind. If he can make double what he lost like half a million, she might be happy but until that day she’s going to be like, ‘Get out of my face’.

“There's a line where Carla says something like, ‘How can you be so stupid, Michael?’ and that really hit home, I felt that. It was like being told off by your mum.” But it isn’t all over for Michael, with the ambitious businessman determined to claw his way back to the top and fix his relationship with Carla.

The TV star reassured fans: “I think he might fall back into his old ways eventually, hopefully. I think I like to play that kind of silly wide-eyed bushy-tailed Michael and then for him to go through some turmoil and then bounce back. I think he’s very resilient.”
