Emmerdale star reveals movie-like episode and how it's spectacularly different

When autumn comes around soap fans start to get excited because it’s time for the annual spectacular that’s come to be known as Super Soap Week. And this year Emmerdale has cooked up something special.

We know it’s going to involve a huge car crash stunt involving Charity (Emma Atkins), Mackenzie (Lawrence Robb) and Chloe (Jessie Elland) and that at least one life will be hanging in the balance as a result.

Lawrence Robb filled us in on some more of the details, and we can’t wait.

‘Hopefully it will come through and look as good on screen as it did when we were filming,’ he said, before setting the scene.

‘My understanding is they’re going to Scotland,’ he said. ‘Mackenzie has been pushed to make a decision to leave the village by Chas (Lucy Pargeter) because he doesn’t want Chloe to know that him and Charity have had that one night of passion. So he’s running away from the village in an effort to prevent Chloe from finding out. My understanding is they’re heading up to Scotland – they just don’t get there!’

What Mackenzie doesn’t know is that Chloe has overheard a conversation between Mack and Charity, so she knows more than she’s letting on. Things in the car start to get tense, and Chloe begins to reveal a different side of herself.

‘I don’t think the anxiety and the stuff kicks in where they start to feel uncomfortable until Charity joins them in the back of the car,’ Lawrence explained. ‘I think that’s when things start to go really downhill in terms of how the audience and us as actors and as the characters all start to feel it.

‘You could feel the tension when you were in there. It was very cool because Jessie wasn’t actually driving. We could just focus on how awkward it was. She was good at being able to jump from psychotic to being quite chilled and mellow and that in itself was quite unnerving.’

Lawrence told us that Emmerdale will break from its usual style to show Chloe’s mental state during these scenes in a very cinematic way.

‘I’ve not seen it yet but my understanding of how it will be shown is you will see two sides of Chloe. It’s very, very clever,’ he enthused. ‘It might be a bit jarring initially because it’s very not Emmerdale. So the viewer who’s watched it for a long time might be a bit “Ooh! What’s going on?’”I think that’s exciting. It’s a very exciting thing to be part of.’

The car crash scene was a complex and ambitious stunt to film, and Lawrence and the other actors involved loved being part of it.

‘We felt like movie stars,’ Lawrence confirmed. ‘It was brilliant. Obviously we only got one crack at it. It was amazing and it was at points utterly terrifying to be at the edge of a cliff.

‘We were all strapped in and we were completely safe the entire time. Certainly for Emma and Jessie, because they were actually hanging over the edge in the car, it was even more challenging for them, I imagine.’

Lawrence told us he can’t wait to see the finished episodes when they go out and hopes the viewers will react positively to the way it’s been filmed, as well as being gripped by the action and emotional drama.

‘I think it will be a breath of fresh air for the average viewer that enjoys it for what it is – and they will notice the difference in how it’s been shot stylistically,’ he commented. ‘Hopefully they’ll like it.’
