Inside The Crown’s Kate Middleton’s ex-boyfriend Rupert Finch

The Crown: Meghan and Harry have given Netflix ‘gold’ says Phillips

Netflix’s highly anticipated historical drama The Crown returned to screens this week with the final five episodes of its sixth season.

While the fictional drama highlighted the start of Kate Middleton’s (played by Meg Bellamy) relationship with Prince William (Ed McVey) at St Andrew’s University, it also explored her previous relationship with another student.

During episode seven, viewers were introduced to Rupert ‘Finchie’ Finch (Oli Green), Kate’s ex-boyfriend who was introduced to her parents.

When she brought Rupert home, it became clear that Kate’s mother Carole Middleton (Eve Best) wanted her to become close to Prince William instead.

William also seemed downcast to see Kate cozied up to Finchie, but is Rupert a fictional character?

Rupert is a real person, who briefly dated the Princess of Wales during their time at St Andrews University, long before she assumed her Royal title.

It’s believed the couple dated for less than a year, when he was 22 years old and when Kate was 19 years old.

According to the Daily Mail, Rupert was a member of the school’s cricket squad and was very popular and has since become a lawyer.

The publication via William’s Princess also reported that Finchie “was considered by some more Kate’s ‘speed’ than a future King.”

Rupert has been asked about his short-lived romance with Kate, but opted to keep his lips sealed.

He told the Daily Mail: “It’s not something I’ll ever talk about. It’s between Kate and me and was a long time ago.”

Later in the series, Kate split from Rupert Finch and embarked on a relationship with Prince William.

However, in the real world, Kate and Rupert remained friends and he even attended her Royal wedding to Prince William in 2011.

The Crown seasons 1-6 are available to stream on Netflix.
