ITV Coronation Street Chesney’s real life including famous soap star sister
Chesney Brown was first welcomed into Coronation Street all the way back in 2003.
He was introduced when actor Sam Aston was just 10-years-old, and has remained a regular fixture on the soap ever since.
The character is named after the singer, Chesney Hawkes, and was brought in as the younger brother of Fiz Brown (Jennie McAlpine) and son of Cilla Battersby-Brown (Wendi Peters).
Chesney recently tied the knot with Gemma Winter (Dolly-Rose Campbell) in one of Weatherfield's biggest weddings.
He has been involved in a variety of storylines over the years, from being held hostage to becoming a dad of quadruplets – there’s sure to be plenty more to come from Chesney still.
We look at actor Sam’s life away from the beloved character, from his famous sister to life with his wife Briony and two children.
Sam was chosen to play Chesney after training at a local drama group, Carl Godby's Theatre Workshop.
He is part of a huge family off-screen as well as on-screen, growing up with three brothers and five sisters.
"Because I grew up in a big family, I've always been used to the chaos. I've got five sisters and three brothers so I'm used to a lot of people being around in the house, children and all sorts," he previously told the Manchester Evening News and other press.
"But with work, it's all well-structured because when we have scenes where the quads are in, we have got the chaperone.
“Karen, who is lovely, we've got the parents who come on set and they'll only bring them on when we do a take, so as crazy as it sounds, it's not as bedlam, I don't think, as it could be when you initially think [about] four babies on set."
Sam is the younger brother of actress Emily Aston, who played Becky Palmer in the soap from 1996 to 1997.
Emily isn’t Sam's only family member to appear on the cobbles, with his brother Joseph Aston playing Tommy Duckworth in 2000.
His other brother Thomas has also worked as an actor, and has appeared in episodes of Casualty and The Bill.
In 2017, he announced his engagement to yoga teacher Briony Gardner, who he met in his teens.
The relationship did end at one point, but they rekindled things after crossing paths once again in a very sweet way.
Sam said: "Three or four years later we were both helping out at the same drama workshop. Carol Godby's acting school, which is where I started as a youngster.
"I was teaching and Briony was in the room next door. I think she might have given me a funny look when I first walked in, but we soon got past that and straight away we got talking. We went for a meal that night at a country pub and that was it. We've been together ever since."
He proposed to her in quite a memorable way – in front of 250 spectators at an annual charity golf dinner.
This was an event he hosted with co-stars Andy Whyment and Alan Halsall, at the Worsley Park Marriott Hotel in Salford.
Sam and Briony have two children together, announcing they were expecting for the first time back in May 2020.
Briony gave birth to a son, Sonny James, back in August 2020, and in June 2022, they welcomed a daughter named Daisy Josephine.
In November, the duo revealed to OK! that they are set to welcome their third child in the coming months.
The couple shared the gender of their unborn child, a girl, with Sam explaining: “Briony had a blood test so we found out then.
“I know it’s not for everybody finding out the gender before the birth, but we’re too impatient. We like to know!”
This gender news comes as the couple share they were actually expecting twins before sadly losing one of the babies to 'Vanishing Twin Syndrome', which they found out during an early scan.
Earlier this year, Sam addressed whether he could see himself playing Chesney until his on-screen children were grown-up, he said: "I'd love to still be here in 20 years. If the powers that be would want me still to be here then I'd love to be."
He added to the MEN: "I can imagine that. I can imagine old man Chesney literally being an old man, pottering off to the Rovers for a cheeky half.
“It would be an honour if am. We'll just have to wait and see. He might be like the new Roy Cropper or something. Or maybe the new Norris, who knows!"
