Kevin McCloud shares update on Grand Designs’ ‘saddest’ ever project

Grand Designs: Kevin McCloud teases 'saddest ever episode'

Kevin McCloud is perhaps best known for hosting Grand Designs, and the 64-year-old designer has seen countless buildings transformed into dream homes over the years.

However, there is one Grand Designs project which remains embedded in his memory.

Casting back to 2019, Edward Short dreamed of building a clifftop home in Devon he could live in with his family.

But soon after the episode was aired, it was branded the “saddest ever” as his decade-long project left him with a concrete shell, £7 million worth of debt and a broken marriage.

The lighthouse renovation was eventually divided into two listings after the property failed to sell for its hefty price tag of £10 million for both combined.

Kevin revisited the property last year in a special episode but many viewers branded it an “eyesore” and “waste of money”.

Even Edward’s daughters admitted they were “over” the whole project which has been part of their lives for so long.

Kevin has now shared an update on the home and given an insight into his relationship with Edward.

“Ed and I still communicate by email now and again,” Kevin told Metro.co.uk.

“It’s not always the case you keep in contact with people, but in his case, it was such a special project and we had a lot of shared interests in common and we share a mutual friend.”

He said Edward has not given up on the property and is “battling along with it”.

“We went back for the revisit which was great and rather redemptive and now I think it is still on the market,” the presenter added.

Kevin explained: “I haven’t checked in with him recently, but he is hoping for a bite on the line as it were.”

The presenter has been part of the well-loved series for almost a quarter of a century and it recently returned to screens for a new season.

However, he’s never let the public get a glimpse of his own home, despite having entered so many people’s abodes for the Channel 4 show.

Grand Designs airs on Wednesdays at 9pm on Channel 4.
