Ross Kemp admits the secret way he tried to get paid more at EastEnders

Ross Kemp has revealed the sneaky way that he’d increase his earnings while working on EastEnders.

The actor has played Grant Mitchell since 1990, and although he left for the second time in 2006, he made an appearance on a flashback episode just last year.

While playing his character on the BBC soap, Ross, 59, learnt how to increase his salary.

In his new book, Take Nothing for Granted: Tales from an Unexpected Life,’ he confessed a savvy trick and while appearing on Good Morning Britain, he was asked to explain how it all worked.

Ross seemed initially hesitant to reveal all when GMB host Susanna Reid said: ‘You decided to top up your earnings didn’t you?’

He initially responded with a ‘Why bring that up?’, before explaining exactly how he did it.

Firstly, he corrected Susanna who assumed he did it by ‘creeping into other people’s shots.’

‘Not their shots necessarily,’ Ross rebutted.

‘If you were doing three days in the Vic, which you normally would do, I would normally be standing back and I’d work out that I was not in the middle episode that they were shooting that day, and obviously cameras – like the one that’s pointing at me now – have a red light on top of it when it’s recording.’

His master plan involved conversing with the people working behind the scenes.

‘So I got on very well with the camera guys and I’d say “Is this episode 235? Not 234, or 233” and they’d go “Yes”.

‘It would be “I’m not in that one, well I am now”.

‘”Big Ron, pint and pork scratchings, was it?”,’ said Ross, mimicking how he would insert himself in the narrative.

Ross was able to earn money from these improvised moments, as the cast were paid episode fees meaning the more episodes they appeared in, the higher their pay.

However, all good things must come to an end: ‘They soon cottoned onto me though, I have to say.’
