Roy Orbison Jr returned to Below Deck Med for season 8

Below Deck Mediterranean season eight teased by Bravo

Roy Orbison Jr hopped on board for Below Deck Med season eight and many fans are curious to know more about the guest star. 

In series eight, episode five, which aired on Monday, October 23, Captain Sandy Yawn announced there would be a familiar face joining them on Mustique. 

It was then revealed it was none other than Roy Orbison Jr with his wife Asa and their three boys whom the crew welcomed with open arms. 

For those who are new to the Below Deck Med universe, Orbison previously featured in series five and six. 

This time around, they were also joined by his younger brother and sister-in-law, as well as Jackass actor Ehren McGhehey.

Who is charter guest Roy Orbison Jr? 

Roy Orbison Jr is a musician, record producer and the co-founder of the record label Roy’s Boys, as well as the co-president of Still Working Music. 

He has been surrounded by music from a young age thanks to his dad, singer, songwriter and musician Roy Orbison who he is named after. 

Nicknamed The Big O and The Caruso of Rock, Orbison Snr was behind hit songs like You Got It, Only the Lonely, In Dreams and Crying. 

Arguably his biggest hit though was 1964’s Oh, Pretty Woman which was used for the main song in the movie Pretty Woman with Julia Roberts and Richard Gere.

Orbison Jr’s godparents were none other than Ring of Fire singer Johnny Cash and his wife June Carter-Cash. 

He grew up backstage watching the likes of Bob Dylan and George Harrison from The Traveling Wilburys and wrote a song with U2’s Bono when he was just 17. 

Even 35 years after his dad’s death aged 52, Orbison Jr continues to keep his memory alive, sharing memories of their time together and his music.

He also co-produced the album Roy Orbison: The Ultimate Collection which reached No.10 in the UK Album Charts.

Ahead of their arrival, Sandy said Orbison Jr and his family were “great people” with “a lot of kids, a lot of energy”. 

Chief stew Tumi Mhlongo met the family for the first time while on board and was happy to get to know them during their stay. 

She told The Daily Dish: “I [had] never met them, but I [had] seen them before on the show…”It was lovely to meet them.”
