Susanna Reid praised as she clashes with Rishi Sunak in car crash GMB interview
It was all change in the Good Morning Britain studio on Tuesday (October 3) as Kate Garraway stepped in to cover for Susanna Reid, who was busy interviewing Prime Minister Rishi Sunak at the Conservative Party conference in Manchester.
The move clearly went down well with ITV viewers, who labelled Susanna, 52, an "icon" after she laid into the PM over several issues affecting the nation including inflation and the lack of transparency over plans to scrap to the stretch of HS2 between Manchester and Birmingham. Presenter Susanna stunned in a red dress – which some suggested was deliberately Labour red in a dig at Tory blue – as she addressed Sunak for around 15 minutes.
Opening the show at 6am alongside Ed Balls, Kate explained: "I'm here because Susanna Reid is at the Conservative Party conference in Manchester." Ahead of her interview, Susanna added: "Good Morning Britain from the Conservative Party conference in Manchester, where the Prime Minister will be joining me and you for a live interview this morning."

She continued: "Economic turmoil, screeching U-turns and struggling in the polls, can Rishi Sunak convince the party faithful and even his own cabinet that he is the leader to secure win at the next general election?"
With Sunak seemingly rattled from the offset, some viewers claimed Susanna interrupted him too often and spoke over him, although the majority of comments on social media spoke in favour of the mother-of-three. Fans took to X, formerly Twitter, following the chat to heap praise on her, meanwhile.
"Susanna Reed is an absolute icon after that interview #gmb," declared one user. Another commented: "Susanna Reid has just made the prime minister look like a complete out of touch idiot, which is pretty on brand #gmb."
A third added: "She knew what she was going up against and very impressive how she kept directing him back onto the questions. Well done #susanna_r eid #gmb." A fourth declared: "Massive car crash interview you took mr Sunak down and got him wobbling like a jelly in an earthquake #ConservativePartyConference Nice one Susanna @gmb @susannareid100 #GMB." And a fifth simply said: "Susanna was having NONE of that #GMB."
Earlier, Susanna ended her interview by addressing issues affecting the north, telling Sunak: "We will let the viewers judge if you have given straight answers to straight questions this morning – thank you Prime Minister." Sunak responded: "Thank you very much for having me."

Kate, meanwhile, is worried she may have gone too far in revealing the details of what it's been like to look after her husband Derek. Her new memoir The Strength of Love aims to showcase the bond which Kate shares with the love of her life Derek, who went into a coma after contracting Covid. However, she can't help feeling like she may have been "a little too honest."
She recently appeared on Capital Breakfast as part of the book's promotion tour. And speaking to Roman Kemp, she confessed that the process of writing down her thoughts felt like a therapy session.
She explained: "I do worry about that now that it's come out because I thought, I can't sugar-coat this because that's doing a disservice to all the millions of people who are dealing with either having a long-term illness themselves or are caring for someone that has a long-term illness."
