The Traitors renewed for third season before series two airs – heres how to apply

The Traitors has been renewed for a third season – before the second series has even aired.

The BBC show, hosted by Claudia Winkleman, proved to be a smash hit when it first hit the screens at the end of 2022. The format saw 22 strangers compete for a £100,000 prize at a castle in the Highlands – with groups secretly divided for “the ultimate game of detection, backstabbing and trust”.

Most of the contestants were known as 'Faithfuls' and were tasked with working out who among them were 'Traitors' – who had the opportunity to 'murder' a fellow participant each night. The group had daily 'banishments' in which they voted to boot out who they thought was a Traitor – while working together on challenges to raise money for the prize fund.

Last week, fans were sent into a frenzy when a short trailer for the second series aired – saying the show was set to return soon. And BBC bosses are so confident it will be another success that they have already opened applications for season three.

Kalpna Patel-Knight, Head of Entertainment at the BBC, said: “The massive unscripted hit The Traitors will be back for a third series. Expect to see more psychological gameplay, exciting challenges and of course Claudia at the helm.

“It will be a thrilling ride for both avid fans and newcomers to the series for sure. The BBC will always remain faithful to The Traitors.”

Stephen Lambert, CEO of the show’s producers Studio Lambert, added: “We’re delighted a third series of The Traitors has been confirmed today ahead of the second series’ arrival on BBC One and BBC iPlayer. The Traitors has been so warmly received by viewers, critics and award juries alike.

“Claudia and the team look forward to keeping audiences on the edge of their seats again with ever more thrilling missions and exceptional players competing in this gripping game of bluff and skill.”

According to the BBC, The Traitors reached audiences of 21 million in its first series and was the biggest new entertainment launch for the broadcaster since 2021. It went on to scoop a host of awards, including a BAFTA and a NTA.

Earlier this year, Toni Ireland, executive producer at Studio Lambert, revealed that the show will be a “different game” when it returns for its second series. When asked about the upcoming season of the programme at the Wales Screen Summit, she said: “The difficult second album (is what) we’re calling it.

“We’re really excited about doing series two, we can’t give too much away at the moment, obviously, but we’re really looking forward to it. I’m excited because the game’s going to be different, people have watched the show now.

“When this cast came to us, they had never seen the show, they were just playing with their gut instinct and just going: ‘This is how I’m going to play this game’.

“Now, I imagine a (new) cast will have seen it, they’re going to come to us with pre-planned ideas of the way they think it’s going to go, and obviously it’s our job to make sure that they’re always kept on their toes and they don’t know what’s around every corner.”
