Bridgerton boss announces new Barbie Netflix show – and it's worlds away from record-breaking movie | The Sun

BRIGERTON creators have announced a new Barbie show which is miles apart from the record-breaking Hollwood movie.

Executive producers Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers have made a new Barbiedocumentary for Netflix.


Taking to X(Twitter), Netflix announced that the artistic duo behind the successful Bridgerton series have embarked on an exciting new Barbie documentary titled Black Barbie.

Lagueria Davis directs the film, and the project is set to tell the story of the first-ever Black Barbie doll produced.

Black Barbie will specifically focus on the impact that three black women working at Mattel had on the doll's evolution.

The tweet reads: "Black Barbie – a new documentary executive produced by Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers and directed by Lagueria Davis – tells the story of the first Black Barbie and the momentous impact three Black women at Mattel had on the evolution of the Barbie brand as we know it. Coming soon to Netflix!"

Anticipating fans expressed excitement about the upcoming documentary as one penned: "Saw this at a film festival this past summer in OKC. Soooo good!

Another added: "Cannot wait to watch this!" 

A third stated: "So looking forward to this!"

It's unsurprising that Netflix has jumped on the current Barbie trend, given the success of Greta Gerwig's Barbie movie.

The Barbie movie passed the $1 billion mark at the box office shortly after its release on July 21.

Speaking about the film's success during an interview at the BFI's London Film Festival,creator Greta said: "It's been incredible" (via Deadline).

"I was invited to go on this journey. 

"Margot Robbie came to me and said, 'do you want to write this?'. 

"She was the producer and star with David Heyman and Tom Ackerley. They put together this incredible team of people, and the process of making it was such a joy."

"I went around theatres, stood in the back, and turned up the volume if I felt it wasn't playing at the perfect level. It was the most thrilling thing."

The movie has broken a series of records, including becoming the highest-grossing film made by a female director and also Warner Bros' highest-grossing film in the US.

Release dates for Black Barbie are yet to be confirmed.
