Hollyoaks Rory Douglas-Speed has strange connection to original Joel actor

Hollyoaks star Rory Douglas-Speed shared the surprising connection he has to the actor who first played Joel Dexter.

Rory, 31, made his first appearance as Joel in 2016, but loyal fans of the soap will know he wasn't the first person to portray the character. The son of Warren Fox (Jamie Lomas) was originated by Andrew Still in 2011.

He appeared as Joel for two years before the character was written out of the show. When Joel returned, the part was recast to Rory. But the two actors seem to have a habit of playing the same roles, as Rory explained during an interview with Inside Soap earlier this year.

"We’ve never met but I have another interesting bit of trivia about him," Rory told the publication. "Before I filled Andrew’s boots in Hollyoaks, I played the part of Sick Boy on stage in the play Trainspotting, and the person who replaced me was Andrew Still."

The soap star added: "So there was this weird flip when we took over each other’s roles. It’s really strange! We have mutual friends and I know he’s a nice guy.

"Maybe one day we’ll get to work together and play brothers or something." This week has been huge for Joel after he discovered a pregnancy test in girlfriend Leela Lomax's (Kirsty-Leigh Porter) bag.

At Felix and Mercedes' engagement party, Joel eagerly awaited Leela to tell him about the test, but was confused when she suggested grabbing a beer. Joel admitted he found the test and shared his excitement at the prospect of becoming a father, encouraging Leela to take the test.

In the bathroom, Mercedes discovered a shocked Leela with a positive test. Wanting to give her time to decide, Mercedes offered to take a negative test that she could use to show Joel.

But things didn't go to plan when Mercedes' test also came out positive. During Friday's episode (November 24) of the soap, Leela couldn't face telling Joel the truth and lied about the positive pregnancy test, after admitting to Mercedes that she doesn't want more children.

Joel, unaware of where Leela stands on the matter, voiced his hopes of them one day having a baby together.
