Joan Collins shares rules to a happy marriage with odd bathroom rule

Joan Collins promises ‘naughty’ plans at King Charles’ Coronation ‘you wouldn’t expect’

Dame Joan Collins recently joined The One Show presenters Alex Jones and Roman Kemp where she revealed her secret to the success of her marriage to Percy Gibson.

After watching a segemnt of an artist, who paints live for the couples during their wedding, Roman turned to Joan and noted: “Dame Joan. 21 years of marriage. What’s the secret?”

To which she immediately quipped: “Being best friends.

“And never, well, we live together practically 24/7. We aren’t separated and we think alike,” leaving Roman to clarify: “Friendship first, really?”

She added: “Yes, so many things. Separate bathrooms,” which stunned Roman as he quipped: “A game changer.”

Joan laughed and added: “I know, I know! It is a very elitist thing to say I am sorry!”

“No I respect the game,” Roman reassured, whilst Alex noted: “I can absolutely see why that would be crucial!”

Joan and her fifth husband Percy married in 2002 and have been happily together since, despite their 30-year age gap.

The iconic actress previously opened up about their age gap and told The Mirror in 2020: “I think there’s a big difference between biological age and the age you’re supposed to be.

“As you know, [Percy] is somewhat younger than me. At first people would always say, ‘What are you going to do about the age difference?’ I’d say, ‘Well, if he dies he dies!’.”

This wasn’t the only time that Dame Joan has been in a relationship where there has been an age gap.

Her first husband, Maxwell Reed, was 13 years older than Joan at the time she was just 19 years old, but the marriage wasn’t a happy one.

She also told The Mirror: “Maybe I shouldn’t have gone out with him. He was much older than me, and he was a famous star.

“And anyway the bottom line is that he called me, and I went out with him again. And after I’d been going out with him for a few months, he asked me to marry him.

“And I thought, ‘Well I better because you know, he took my virginity’. I really hated him, but I was so filled with guilt, that he had done this thing to me.”

They separated two years after they married in 1954, and their divorce was finalised in 1956.

The One Show airs weekdays from 7pm on BBC One.
