The Great fans rage as Elle Fannings series given unfortunate fate

The Great season 3 trailer

Elle Fanning’s The Great has reportedly been canceled by streaming service Hulu months after the release of season three.

Many fans have speculated that season four’s filming was delayed by the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes that have gripped Hollywood since May, but the sudden update reported by Deadline revealed that the third season will also be its final.

The satirical comedy follows the life of Catherine the Great during her early days in Russia, with Hollywood starlet Elle – who was also a producer on the show – taking the role of the historical queen.

The irreverent storylines and imaginative twist on period dramas have been highly praised by both viewers and critics, with the three seasons picking up multiple Emmy nods over the years with its lead actor, Nicholas Hoult, earning his first-ever nomination just last year.

Elle has previously spoken out on how the role has marked a pivotal, and emotional, change in her Hollywood career since making her first on-screen appearance at the age of three.

The now 25-year-old explained during The Hollywood Reporter’s Comedy Actress roundtable earlier this year that she had only been known as “a child actor or a Disney princess” until she donned Catherine’s crown.

The Maleficent star admitted the role was another “blond royal” but highlighted how undoubtedly “grateful” she was for the show because it meant she no longer had to “fight against the child actor thing anymore”.

Elle and Nicholas are likely just as devastated by the news as The Great fans who took to X sharing their disappointment and outrage.

One viewer said they were “genuinely gutted” by the announcement, praising the show as “one of the absolute best things to appear on my tellybox for quite some while”. (sic)

Another shared: “This is one of the best shows I’ve seen for a long time. Loved it. It just seemed to fall under the radar and not get the attention it deserved.”

A third added: “Why is everyone so against my favorite shows?? at this point i am scared of even watching a new show. they could get cancelled anytime n i am left heartbroken.” (sic)

A few declared the cancellation marked “the end of an era” while many took the opportunity to make some dastardly puns: “That’s not so GREAT is it” and “not a Great move”.
